I am ever so thankful for Abigail Charlotte. She is named for my mother and my husband. She is my firstborns first best friend. She is the Buddha in our midst. The light in our family heart. The one who was meant to be. She is my voice, my drive, my conscience, my soul, my journey, my daughter.

Zuzuday: Birthday Mo-mo Bounce
On October 5th Zuzu turned 6 years old. The weekend before we hosted a birthday party at home per the little Miss’s request. She was, in that Zuzu way of hers, extremely specific in what she wanted in order to properly celebrate. She wanted to bounce. She wanted chocolate cake with Monkey’s on it and she wanted the monkey’s to resemble her lovey who has been her nighttime buddy since she was a wee one. The main difference was the confectioned lovies needed pink and purple bows.

Once upon a time, there was a little baby with a friend she eventually named Mo-mo. Zuzu was and still is a huge fan of her Mo-mo, which was her word for monkey. This year, as she turned 6 she announced she wanted a Mo-mo party!

a bag full of candy from the “piyanta” as Zuzu still pronounces it. And note the string pull option. Somehow we just can’t bring ourselves to beat our most loved characters in celebration.

and a book! The bargain we struck was that she could invite as many kiddos as she wanted so long as she agreed to a book exchange in lieu of presents. Every child brings a wrapped book and then goes home with a new one!

of course this was once they were all properly sugared and bounced out courtesy of our favorite German Bakery- Strossners.

all in all we think it was a success! The best part of a Saturday afternoon bounce house at your home party was the fact that the bounce house owners couldn’t make it back to pick it up till Monday morning which meant a full weekend of bouncing for our family!
It was a wonderful celebration, simple, fun, full of life and laughter. Much like Zuzu herself.
Quailday: Thank you for your support on the Buddy Walk!
Happy Halloween!
31 for 21: Day 14
31 for 21: Day 13
Zuzu turns 6!
Best. Party.Yet.
I still remember Zuzu’s first birthday and our multiple attempts to make the day memorable for her that no matter how hard we tried still felt forced and fumbling. On the day itself she went to school like any other, but being good working parents we brought tiny cupcakes to her class and gathered the little ones around to sing. She stared at us with her hands raised into their up demand and cried a little when it was met with a cupcake thrust into it. She peered at us even more curiously when we didn’t gather her things and head out to the car but instead sat down at the little round toddler tables and handed out cupcakes. She rose again and again, tugging first at my shirt, and the at her dad’s with growing concern at this break in routine. In the middle of all of the rising, and tugging, and resettling her cupcake was stolen by a neighboring child who had no trouble whatsoever at this change in routine.
Later that weekend we gathered a Publix cake frosted colorfully with the Baby Einstein catepillar and joined some friends at our local zoo and then the Whole Foods eating area to share the cake. Again, a nice outing, but not really “us”. We tried later to tie some balloons to her chair and sing with a lit mini-cake for the perfect photo op. My lens was met with cries for yogurt and to nurse, shreiks from the balloon wafting into her line of sight and further tears over the frosting that landed in her tired eyes as she swiped at them.
The next year w did better with a party at her local park. Nervous glances were still seen though as we sang to her over her Elmo cake. The year after that we even managed to coordinate the party favors with the help of a local friend’s handiwork that crated little felt capes to fly the children around the park before diving into a homemade Wordgirl cake. Her favorite character to date.
The next year we bounced at a local pizza place and after that we went with a gymnastics party which was a good call for the rowdy, multi-aged crowd we tended to include.
But this year, this year the party finally felt like us. We rented a bounce house that luckily for us would remain in our yard for the full weekend. We had a cake decorated by our favorite German Bakery with purple frosting and her beloved Momo’s ( her monkey lovies) decked out in pink hairbows. The party was made to order and Zuzu was tickled. We managed to also dodge the issue of too many presents with such a crowd by instead requesting each child bring a book to exchange for a new book. It was a beautiful fall weekend and by far my favorite of the celebrations of all things Zuzu. Happy Sixth year my dear- you are so very loved!
Happy 6th Birthday dear Zuzu! 31 for 21: Day 5
Happy Birthday dear Zuzu! Today is your 6th birthday.
We are so blessed to be your family. I feel like our bond as a family has only grown tighter over this past year. The older you get the more we discover “you”. You have had such a constant sense of self. A sparkling, go-getter personality that has been trying since day one to show itself. I feel like now you are coming in to your own! The changes and growth in you over this past year are so phenomenal. You sparkle with intention and confidence now. Yet the thing that remains most constant is your tender heart. There is not a mean bone in your body. You just want to love and be loved. That is so clear now in every move you make, every word you speak and every activity you jump in to. You dive in with open arms and a full heart.
You are in public school now and absolutely blooming with your love of community, learning and making your own choices.
Once again you asked to do a “birthday interview” and write your own post. Later on this month I’ll share my gratitude for you and your series of celebrations- but for now- as you wish!
