corner view: dream

My dream right now is both big and small. Both ordinary and extraordinary. For the present and the future.  I am currently feathering my nest in happy anticipation of a new little bird joining us next spring. Lovey and I made the decision earlier this summer to grow our family and we are currently tickled pink with anticipation and expectation. I’m well into my second trimester now and happily keeping my food down, which is a welcome change from previous gestations. I feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to do this again.

My dream right now is a subliminal message I keep running through my head and heart that all will be well and easy. That we’ve faced the challenges that previous pregnancies have given us and shown ourselves worthy of one more chance. One more little bundle of joy and hope and goodness and light. A gift this pregnancy is. When I’m resting my mind is full of dreams of my three girls running and playing together, laughing and hugging. One more little pal to fill our hearts and home with the love and connection we already know.

corner view: exotic

I had to laugh that I felt very banal posting these flower photos as exotic! They were the first that came to mind though, so I give you Birds of Paradise and Bottlebrush Tree! They aren’t our everyday flowers- so they do qualify as exotic I dare say!

corner view: music

We love music in our house. Not that any of us are emblazoned with a particular talent- other than keen ears at this time. Pre-kiddos Lovey and I enjoyed many a night at small venues listening to our favorite groups and when we were at home a record, a cd or the radio was almost always on. We’ve moved on somewhat with the times and tend to stream most of our music nowadays as our collections line the walls. Zuzu enjoys physical movement to music and most kids tunes. Her sister, is quite happy with the grown-up tunes and an offer of a slow dance. Either and any way- nothing fills a home quite like the music of a family.

pomegranite

It doesn’t take long for the bright, starry, orange flowers on our pomegranite tree to burst into full-flame fruit. It’s a change we welcome at the start of every autumn!

corner view: passion

I know this should have been an easy one. We all have passions right? Then I realized the block I was having with it was over the word passion- not so much- just not a word I used to self-describe. When I hit on that I heard Lovey’s voice in my head as he told person after person of yet another “melt-up” I had over a piece of pie or beef or breakfasty item we found at this restaurant or he had made for me. Passion- no- melt-ups yes. You know how some people get when something goes wrong again and again- and then they lose it? Well I only have about 6 stories I tell- and over half of those involve food. In the moment- when the smell hits just right and the plate is so very pretty in front of me- and the cook’s passion has obviously come through in the flavors that have married. That’s when that melt-up hits. And approximately 45 minutes later- I’m done. No longer entertained, ready for bed. It’s weird- I LOVE food. Not necessarily what is in vogue- fresh, local, haute cuisine, vegan, or whatever the hot new craze is. My range goes from a McDonald’s pumpkin pie in November to a veal chop in a Florentine cafe. I don’t discriminate. It doesn’t have to be organic or homemade. I just have to love it. Of course I love all those things too- but really I just love food- and when it’s made with love and offered up- I’m thrilled to join in. Just ask our dear St. Louis friends who made the unfortunate mistake of inviting me over once for a quick lunch as payback for a coffee I’d purchased. Their “quick lunch” was a breaded, stuffed and rolled chicken breast that would have taken hours of prep in my kitchen. They are still amongst the dearest in my heart even after years of not seeing them. Just knowing they are out their cooking makes me smile. Food’s like that for me- I just like knowing what you love- and then trying it for myself. What’s your favorite dish that brings a smile to your face?

The House of Two Gables

This is our homeplace, our little house nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a sweet little house hand-built in 1941. It had one owner previously and we purchased it 8 years ago after she passed away. It’s a funny little house with hardwood floors, a fireplace, a builtin-bookcase for your pretties and what-nots, a pantry, 2 screen porches and old kitchen that could use some love. The yard is filled with foliage that has been here long before us and will still be here long after we are gone. It’s been a happy little home and lately we feel we may be outgrowing it. While we may move on in a year or two the homeplace where we started our family will stay in our hearts.
