Momma Monday- Holiday Highlights Week

One of the reasons I love Autumn so much is there is just so darn much celebrating to be done. From first days of school, to end of summer Labor Day celebrations, to football games and tailgates, to the cooling off of our lovely planet and draping of Mother Nature in her colorful shawl, apple and pumpkin picking, to the more traditional festivities of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and a few birthdays sprinkled in for good measure. I’ve always enjoyed the Holiday’s with a kid-like enthusiasm housed in my grown-up body even before having kids of my very own. And now, the joy felt around this little House of Two Gables is unparelleled. Zuzu is heard on a fairly daily basis proclaiming the likes of, “Guess what Momma, tomorrow is Trash Day! Yay!!!!!!”” or “The Quail just grabbed her toy! Good Job Quail!” or “It’s Saturday!!!! ” and my personal favorite, “Next is Brooke’s birthday, and then my birthday and then your birthday!”  Now that the season of 1000 festivities is upon us I can only imagine the the upcoming smiles and good cheer to come!

Since I am quite focused on documenting these joy’s with far too many photographs, we will most likely dedicate the week following each festivity and celebration with a week of our best captured memories. You will notice a new category labeled Holiday Fun where you can catch a summary of our seasonal delight.

Halloween was a funfilled week here. In continuing with Zuzu’s favorite Superhero theme from her Birthday party earlier in the month she was quite insistent on a WordGirl costume and her baby sister joining her as her faithful sidekick- Captain HuggyFace. Thursday night was our town’s Downtown Trick or Treat party, friday was the girl’s school’s Halloween party and saturday rounded out the Halloween fun with trick-or-treating with our good friend’s Tinkerbelle, The Fireman and Captain America.

May you all find the joy in everyday celebrations in your own lives. There is nothing finer.

Meet Challula- The Family Cat

Lovey’s brother is in between homes right now and when he is in his home he is rarely home. So sweet little Challula- affectionately known by all as Chula is coming to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains with us! Chula came to him by way of his Auntie’s farm. We are excited to have a chance to bond with she; who has essentially become the family cat. She will be making her way to us on this Friday. Zuzu will officially be named her person. Zu is beside herself with excitement. We had a lovely Kitty- named Sasha who we affectionately called Kitty until Zuzu was about 4 months old. Sadly he passed away from kidney failure. During one of the rare snowstorms we get in our part of the country. We’ve been a bit too grieved to find a new pet until recently. We briefly had a sweet little kitten take up residence in our garage earlier this summer. But sure enough, the day after I took him to the veterinarian for a well check and round of vaccinations he disappeared. I’m fairly certain I know who has him. Rumor has it he has taken up residence with one of the animal-loving staff at our local bakery. By the time we found this out though he had been gone a month and we felt it wouldn’t be right to ask for him back. Zuzu knows he went to live with “his family” and is quite content talking about it in those terms. When she heard Chula would be coming to live with her though her first comment was, “Yay! I will call her Solomon!” Which is what we had named the other kitten. When I explained that this was a different kitty and one that already had an identity she smiled and said, “Yes- then Solomon can come back and live with us too!”. Poor dearie- she is quite matter-of-fact about the whole cat conundrum and hopefully Chula will stay with us a good long while and become her BFF.

Welcome Chula!

tryptaphan & ambien

I was a week overdue with rising blood pressure 3 years ago tonight. I was scheduled to go to one hospital only to receive a call that there was a full moon, the weekend was coming and there was no room in the inn. Well- that’s how I remember it at least. My OB called (oh yes- the only one I hadn’t met in the practice and had heard horror stories about his meanness and ego). He called saying he heard the hospital said there was no room to induce me and bring this little one into the world, and how was I feeling; and if I would like and had my bags packed; then yes he could make arrangements for me at another hospital if that was agreeable. My bags were packed, my tears wiped dry and off we went with one last pause in the exit of our life as two for a photographic still.  When we returned, God willing; there would be three and life would never be still again…

We drove to St. Francis Womens’ & Children’s Hospital in Greenville; a mere hour away. The cervidil was placed, Lovey tried to make himself comfortable on the fold-out chair for a night in wait; the machine turned on to monitor and record the smooth, quick rhythms of  the last hours our hearts would beat nested together. An ambien offered and turkey sandwich administered, whispered wishes of good luck and health and cheer for the day unfolding ahead of us….

Anniversary Song

anniversary dance0002

Have you ever seen a sight as beautiful
as that of the rain-soaked purple
of the white birch in spring?

Have you ever felt more fresh or wonderful
than on a warm fall night
under a Mackerel sky,
the smell of grapes on the wind?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And I’ll share them all for a cup of coffee
and to wear your ring

Have you ever had the pleasure of watching
a quiet winter’s snow slowly gathering
like simple moments adding up?

Have you ever satisfied a gut feeling
to follow a dry dirt road that’s beckoning you
to the heart of a shimmering summer’s day?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And I’ll share them all for a cup of coffee
and to wear your ring

And I don’t know how I survived those days
before I held your hand
Well I never thought that I would be the one
to admit that the moon and the sun
shine so much more brighter when
seen through two pairs of eyes than
when seen through just one

Have you ever seen a sight as beautiful
as a face in a crowd of people
that lights up just for you?

Have you ever felt more fresh or wonderful
as when you wake
by the side of that boy or girl
who has pledged their love to you?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And now every morning there’s a cup of coffee
and I wear your ring
