Zuzuday: Halloween is a fashionista’s dream…

Oh dear Zuzu, this holiday was made for you! Our Gal Friday went as…well everything but Girl Friday! A lovely pink fairy costume was purchased at her request last month for the big day. Then somewhere along the line she insisted that we buy her Dora’s backpack so that she could complete her Dora get-up. Unfortunately that one is yet to be photographed as she is always busy exploring when she has it on. The week before the holiday she announced she was returning to last year’s Word Girl hit. Then the day of her school party she vascilated between being a “heart-pink” ballerina and a ladybug to match her sister. When I picked her up from school I noticed  a bee costume in her cubby. The final winner was Snow White for our trip to the mountains and on the big day itself when we told her we were going trick-or-treating with Sophie she jumped up and started chanting, ” Snow White… oh, yeahhhh…oh, yeahhhhh…. Snow White…oh, yeahhhhhh….oh yeahhhh….

Mommaday: Holiday Hi-lights!

We spent the 4th of July with my parents! The trip itself was a long one. We had a flight cancelled about halfway there and ended up staying overnight in Minneapolis. Then were rerouted to another airport in order to make it there in time for fireworks.  We had a few other kinks, like our carseats going on to the original airport and not following us and a panicked Momma over the dwindling supply of diapers and pureed foods that were carried on and therefore available this side of security. But our spirits were bright- mainly due to our little girls and their happy-go-lucky-attitude they must have summoned from beyond. We were able to borrow a couple of carseats from the airport to help us get to my parents’ home safely and got an additional sight-seeing adventure worked in along the way.

In the meantime all the extra airport time alloted us:

plenty of tummy time for the Quail.

time for resting…

dinner and a show

some serious Little People reinactments

time for crawling practice disguised as relay races…

and time with the happiest kid that ever spent 2 days in an airport!

We finally got on an airplane and were headed west when we looked out the window and were grateful we hadn’t any red luggage:

and celebrated our lack of red luggage with this:

I love airplane food almost as much as I love hospital and school cafeteria food! That’s not sarcastic either! Give me airplane cookies any day of the week- when I found they started selling them in the store I breathed a sigh of relief that I could lay off pressuring the airline attendants for spares. Fortunately my newfound laid-back attitude has reaped what it has sewn!

More pictures of the actual kiddos on holiday to come!

Zuzu Day: Easter Fun and Hunting Season

Egg Hunting Season that is!

Last week we attended the neighboring town’s Egg Hunt and I think it was there that I first realized I had a touch of PMS- Pageant Mom Syndrome in me. The kids were lined up according to age but still expected to race to find the same group of eggs. Needless to say as my 3 year old would contemplate if the egg in front of her was the ideal companion for those already in her basket, a 5 year old would swoop in going for quantity over quality. Fortunately at our local Egg Hunt the rules were a bit more structured and baseball field fences kept those scrupulous 5 year olds away from the eggs intended for the contemplative 3 year olds. She faired much better. But I still found myself, as typical- running late, then irritated with the car cutting in front of us to finagle the better parking spot and rush their beloveds on to the field for the ideal photo ops.

We had fun with all of the festival games and treats, our neighbors and friends, both old and new and the gorgeous weather. We’re thinking maybe next year we’ll see if we have it in us to host a brunch and egg hunt for the girls friends next year!

Momma Monday: Melt up in progress….

A few years ago I had what remains, simply the best piece of coconut pie I’ve ever had. It was gooey, crunchy and perfectly toasted. Imagine coconut creme pie offered up in the format of a pecan pie- Voila! Perfection! It had followed on the shirttails of a delicious standard Southern meat & 3 meal at a local restaurant that we hadn’t taken the time to try in the previous 3 years. The building was completely unadorned, the name with a Diner in the title, the list of vegetables long and full of starch and the patrons were actually adorned in their church clothes. The mac & cheese- exactly how I like it- crunchy on top- eggy enough  in the middle but with a good amount of cheese actually mixed into the noodles. The cafeteria style turkey and gravy happily strewn over mashed potatoes at my request with tasty sweet potato souffle on the side and the yet unknown to me pineapple casserole. The more I ate, the happier and more animated I got. The glow lasted the rest of the afternoon only fading as I did into my cozy sheets that evening.

During the piece of pie, Lovey looked at me, shook his head and coined, ” A melt-up to be sure….”

Indeed. I look forward to these, what only can be organically described as estrogen surges now. And this weekend one was in full progress. The greatness of these for me is I feel naturally content, heart bursting with domestic bliss and rightness. It started with what hasn’t happened in months. I woke up naturally, to birdsong and a tightly snuggled toddler cleaved to me. No alarm, no bad dreams, no headfog. And it lasted through the weekends chores, through the gathering in the local park with some of my favorite families in a mad hunt for eggs, a happy market run, an afternoon’s cupcake decorating session with Zu, a lovely dinner at Lovey’s co-worker’s home with company and gorgeous children to thrill Zu and the Quail, through the next morning’s tantrums resulting from us all staying up too late, the perfect of afternoon brunches on our porch complete with nature’s pride bursting into an oil painting around us, an at-home egg hunt and photo session with the family, the afternoon’s tantrums fueled from too much sugar and a lovely evening meal of crock-pot Easter ham, gorgeous spring asparagus with browned-butter sauce, rich carrot-bake and hearty fresh rye bread and butter from our local bakery.

The chores; not too overwhelming and even better- complete.

The food, deliciously simple and spring like.

The tulips in a pastel rendition of my heart.

The children, clad in Easter bonnets and finery.

The metaphors, only slightly overdone, much like the ham.

The perfect end to a week spent celebrating Momma’s proud achievement of a promotion to a new administrative position at work. My new position is an opportunity to advocate for the examiner, for the family and quality of work. My daily thoughts can  bend in a slightly broader view of the agency, policy and procedure in a format that is still somewhat familiar. I am thrilled with this new opportunity and can’t wait to get started at the end of the month. My guess is this was the other inspiration for my lighter view of life starting this weekend. Joy!
